Hypochlorous acid is a weak acid with the chemical formula HClO. It forms when chlorine dissolves in water, and itself partially dissociates in water, into hypochlorite (-) and hydronium ions. Usually it is used as a bactericide.
Hypochlorous acid is produced in electrolysis first. There are three methods shown as follows:
Electrolysis of saline solutions: By using salt water for producing strong acidic water but the HCLO is unstable.
Electrolysis of saline solutions in which HCl is mixed for production of hypochlorous acid (weak acid).
Electrolysis of water in which HCl is mixed for production of hypochlorous acid (weak acid).
Each of the methods has specific advantages but is uneconomic because of consumable platinum (titanium) electrode plates expensive.
Solutions of hypochlorites can be produced by electrolysis of an aqueous chloride solution. The composition of the resulting solution depends on the pH at the anode. In acid conditions the solution produced will have a high hypochlorous acid concentration, but will also contain dissolved gaseous chlorine, which can be corrosive, at a neutral pH the solution will be around 75% hypochlorous acid and 25% hypochlorite. Some of the chlorine gas produced will dissolve forming hypochlorite ions. Hypochlorites are also produced by the disproportionation of chlorine gas in alkaline solutions.
Global Hypochlorous acid market was valued at 23.67 Million US$ in 2018 and is projected to reach 40.49 Million US$ by 2024, at a CAGR of 9.36% during the forecast period.
